Mexican train derailment kills at least 13 people, 98 injured

MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities stated on Sunday that at the least 13 individuals had been killed after an Interoceanic Practice carrying 250 individuals derailed within the southern state of Oaxaca.

The Mexican Navy stated the practice, which derailed close to the city of Nizanda, was carrying 9 crew members and 241 passengers.

Of these on board, 139 had been reported to be out of hazard, whereas 98 had been injured, together with 36 who had been receiving medical help.

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on X that 5 of the injured had been in important situation, including that senior officers had been dispatched to the location to help the households of these killed.

The governor of Oaxaca, Salomon Jara Cruz, expressed condolences to the households of these killed within the accident and stated state authorities had been coordinating with federal businesses to help these affected.

Mexico’s Lawyer Common’s Workplace has already opened an investigation into the incident, Lawyer Common Ernestina Godoy Ramos stated in a social media put up.

The Interoceanic Practice, inaugurated in 2023 below former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, varieties a part of the broader Interoceanic Hall undertaking.

The initiative was designed to modernize the rail hyperlink throughout the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting Mexico’s Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.

The Mexican authorities has sought to develop the isthmus right into a strategic commerce hall, increasing ports, railways and industrial infrastructure with the aim of making a route that would compete with the Panama Canal.

The practice service can be a part of a broader push to increase passenger and freight rail in southern Mexico and stimulate financial improvement within the area.
